About ceelab

ceelab was born out of frustration: existing labeling tools are expensive, limited and leave little freedom. So I built my own.

Where the name comes from

cee stands for création et édition d'étiquettes, French for creating and editing labels, which is what the tool did at first. Today it handles all kinds of documents, but the name stuck. The “lab” is the laboratory: the place where you design your templates.

One engine, several interfaces

Everything runs on a single engine that generates your documents. You choose the interface that suits you, and the result is always the same.

  • The web interface
  • ceelab, the desktop application: you create, manage and generate everything directly, and you have the lab to design your templates.
  • cee, the command line, for those who already do a little programming: once installed, you call it from a terminal and it fits easily into your automations.

The web interface is planned for later; today, ceelab consists of the desktop application and the cee command.

The command line at a glance

Just give the name of an existing template:

cee print shipping-label #type
cee print shipping-label --copies 10
cee print shipping-label --set name="Jane Doe"
cee edit --last

Why templates are created in the lab

Designing a template is visual work: you decide which image goes where, which variable sits in which spot. That calls for a graphical interface. Your templates are saved in .ceet files, and the command line is there to use them, not to create them.
